Google Ads for Landscapers: What to Do Before Spring

Google Ads for landscapers in the UK: what to set up before spring, which keywords and negatives to use, and how to keep the budget on larger jobs.

Landscaping searches climb as the weather improves. Landscapers who build their Google Ads account in winter are ready when enquiries start. Those who wait until April pay to learn during the busiest weeks. Here is what to prepare.

January and February: build

Pick the services to advertise. Choose the work with the best margin and where your photos are strongest: patios, driveways, garden design, decking, fencing, artificial grass.

Create one ad group per service. Each with its own keywords:

  • "patio installers [town]"
  • "landscapers near me"
  • "garden design [town]"
  • "decking installers [town]"
  • "artificial grass installers [town]"

Build one landing page per service. Photos of that work, reviews, the areas you cover and a form that accepts photos.

Set up tracking. Calls and forms, tested before launch.

Negative keywords to add

jobs, vacancy, apprenticeship, course, training, DIY, how to, ideas, design ideas, pictures, images, software, app, game, supplies, wholesale, buy, B&Q, cheap slabs, plants for sale, grant, free, salary

"Garden ideas" searches are large and almost never become enquiries. Block "ideas" unless you are running a content campaign.

If you do not want small maintenance jobs, add: mowing, grass cutting, hedge trimming, gardener, weeding.

March: launch

  • Target the postcodes you want to work in. Choose people in the area, not interested in it.
  • Start with phrase and exact match.
  • Published UK estimates put landscaping clicks at £0.80 to £3.
  • Check the search terms report twice a week for the first month.

April to June: manage the peak

  • Move budget to the services bringing booked jobs.
  • Pause or cut back when your diary is full for the next two months, or change the ad to say when you can start.
  • Add new photos and reviews to the landing pages as jobs finish.

Keep the budget on larger jobs

  • Use ad copy that signals the work: "full garden makeovers", "patios and paving".
  • Ask for budget range on the form.
  • Exclude maintenance words.
  • Bid more in areas where past jobs were larger.

Add Meta retargeting

People take time to decide on a garden. Show your recent projects on Facebook and Instagram to those who visited your pages.

After the season

Lower budgets in late summer. Use autumn for fencing, planting and "book now for spring" messages. Review the year: which service and which postcode gave the best cost per job.

Common questions

Can landscapers use Local Services Ads? Landscaping was not supported in the UK when we checked, so Search ads are the main paid option on Google.

How much should I spend? Work back from the number of jobs you want and your typical profit per job.
