Why Are Boiler Repair Google Ads So Expensive in the UK? A 2026 Guide to CPC and Lead Quality

Why boiler repair Google Ads cost so much in the UK, what a click and a lead really cost in 2026, and how heating engineers turn leads into booked repairs.

If you run boiler repair Google Ads, you have probably looked at a £9 click in January and wondered who is paying that and why. The short answer: the person searching "boiler not working" has no heating, often a family, and will ring the first engineer who answers. Every Gas Safe business in your area knows that, so they all bid for the same few hundred searches.

This guide breaks down what a boiler repair click costs in 2026, why it costs that, and the number that matters more than either: what you pay for a booked repair.

What boiler repair clicks cost in 2026

Published UK estimates for 2026 put "boiler repair near me" at roughly £5 to £12 a click, "gas engineer near me" at £5 to £10 and "emergency plumber" searches anywhere from £8 to £25 in a city (Whito, UK plumber marketing costs, May 2026). London and the South East usually sit 15 to 30% above that.

Those ranges move with the weather. The first cold week of autumn is when boilers that sat idle all summer fail, and it is when bids jump. A click that cost £6 in August can cost £11 in the second week of November without anything changing in your account.

Why the cost per click is so high

Urgency

Nobody shops around for a dead boiler at 7pm. The searcher calls one, maybe two numbers. That makes the top two ad positions worth far more than position four, so advertisers push bids to stay there.

Job value beyond the first visit

A repair call-out might be worth £90 to £250. But a boiler that keeps failing becomes a replacement quote, and a happy customer books an annual service. Engineers who know their lifetime value bid higher, and they set the price for everyone else.

National brands in the auction

Boiler cover and insurance companies bid on many of the same words. They are not competing for your job, they are selling a policy, but their budget still raises the price you pay.

Thin search volume

Boiler repair is a local search. In a mid-size town there may only be a few hundred searches a month. Small volume plus several determined bidders equals expensive clicks.

CPC is the wrong number to watch

A £4 click that never rings is more expensive than a £12 click that books a £180 repair. What you want to know is cost per booked job, and you get there in three steps:

  1. Cost per lead = ad spend ÷ calls and forms that were real enquiries (not spam, not suppliers, not "do you do free quotes?").
  2. Booking rate = booked repairs ÷ real enquiries.
  3. Cost per booked repair = cost per lead ÷ booking rate.

Worked example: you spend £1,200 in November. That brings 60 calls, of which 40 are genuine boiler enquiries. Cost per lead is £30. You book 24 of them, a 60% booking rate. Your cost per booked repair is £50. If the average repair invoice is £160 and a third of those customers take an annual service, that is a healthy month even though the clicks looked expensive.

Lead quality: the leaks that waste boiler budgets

Search terms you did not mean to buy

Open your search terms report. You will usually find "boiler repair course", "boiler engineer jobs", "how to reset Worcester boiler", brands of boiler you do not service, and the names of big competitors. Every one of those is a negative keyword waiting to be added.

DIY intent

"Boiler pressure low" and "boiler error code F28" bring cheap clicks from people looking for a YouTube fix. Some will call in the end, most will not. Keep those words in a separate, low-budget campaign so they cannot eat your emergency budget.

The wrong area

Set location targeting to "presence" (people physically in your area), not "presence or interest". Otherwise you pay for someone in Spain searching for a boiler engineer in your town for their parents, which happens more than you would think.

Call handling decides your cost per job

This is the part most heating engineers underestimate. A boiler repair lead goes cold in minutes. If the call goes to voicemail while you are under a sink, that customer rings the next ad. You have paid for the click and someone else gets the job.

  • Run ads only in the hours someone can answer, or use a call handling service in the evenings.
  • Track missed calls. Most call tracking tools report them, and the number is usually a surprise.
  • Call back within 10 minutes. A text saying "Sorry I missed you, I'm on a job, I'll ring at 4pm" keeps a surprising number of customers.
  • Note the outcome of each call (booked, quoted, not suitable) so you can work out the booking rate above.

Google Ads or Local Services Ads for boiler repair?

Heating engineers can also use Google Local Services Ads, where you pay per lead instead of per click. Published 2026 UK estimates put boiler service and repair leads at around £22 to £45 each (Trade2Base). You need Gas Safe registration, insurance and Google's background checks, and you have less control over which jobs come through. Most heating businesses that do well run both. We compare them properly in Local Services Ads vs Google Search Ads.

Planning a boiler repair budget for winter

Treat the year in three seasons:

  • September to October: push boiler servicing. Clicks are cheaper and every service is a future repair or replacement customer.
  • November to February: repair season. Put most of the budget here and make sure the phones are covered.
  • March to August: scale back repair bids and focus on installations, which are planned purchases rather than emergencies.

For a single town, a starting point of £20 to £40 a day in peak season is sensible. Then let your cost per booked repair, not your cost per click, decide whether to raise it. Our seasonal HVAC budget plan goes into the month-by-month split.

The bottom line

Boiler repair Google Ads are expensive because the searches are urgent, the jobs lead to more work and a lot of businesses want them. You cannot change that. You can control which searches you pay for, how fast you answer, and whether you measure booked repairs instead of clicks. Get those three right and a £10 click stops looking expensive.

If you want a second pair of eyes on your heating account, our PPC management team can review your search terms, tracking and call handling and show you where the budget is leaking.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a boiler repair click cost on Google Ads in the UK?

Published 2026 estimates put "boiler repair near me" at about £5 to £12 per click, with emergency searches in cities reaching £8 to £25. London and the South East are usually higher.

What is a good cost per lead for boiler repair?

It depends on your booking rate and job value. Work out cost per booked repair (cost per lead divided by booking rate) and compare it with your average invoice plus the value of repeat servicing.

Should heating engineers use Local Services Ads?

Many do, alongside search ads. Local Services Ads charge per lead and require Gas Safe registration and Google checks; search ads give more control over which jobs and areas you pay for.
