Lawn care is a repeat business with a modest price per visit, so the customers you want are close together and stay for years. Marketing should aim at filling streets, not chasing one-off cuts across the county.
Aim for density
Ten customers on one estate are worth more than ten spread over ten villages, because you save travel between them. Pick the neighbourhoods you want and focus your effort there.
1. Start with the neighbours
After each visit, post a card to the houses either side and opposite: "We look after the lawn at number 22." Offer a free lawn check.
2. Make the offer clear
Customers want to know what they get and what it costs. Publish a simple plan: number of visits a year, what each includes, and a price from a stated figure for a small lawn.
3. Set up your Google Business Profile
Choose the right categories, list lawn mowing, lawn treatment, scarifying and aeration as services, and add photos of striped, healthy lawns. Ask for reviews.
4. Use local Facebook groups and Nextdoor
These are where people ask "can anyone recommend someone to cut my grass?" Be recommended. Ask customers to mention you.
5. Signwrite the van and wear the name
You are parked on residential streets all day. That is free advertising to exactly the right people.
6. Offer a referral reward
A free visit for each neighbour who signs up is cheap compared with any advert.
7. Target landlords, letting agents and small businesses
Rented homes, small offices and care homes need grass cut on schedule. One agent can bring many properties.
8. Run small search ads in spring
If you want to grow faster, run Google Search ads for "lawn care [town]" and "lawn mowing service near me" in your chosen postcodes only. Published UK estimates put landscaping clicks at £0.80 to £3. Keep the area tight.
9. Sell the next service
Customers who have their lawn cut may want treatment, scarifying, hedge trimming or a garden tidy. Tell them what else you do.
Keep the customers you have
- Turn up on the day you said
- Text before each visit
- Take payment automatically by direct debit or card
- Send a short note in winter about what is planned for spring
Keeping a customer for five years matters more than winning five new ones who leave.
When to market
Start in late winter. People decide who will look after the lawn as growth starts in spring.
Common questions
Should I do one-off cuts? They can lead to regular work. Price them higher than a visit on a plan.
Is paid advertising worth it for lawn care? Only in a tight area, because each visit has a low value. Free local methods should come first.
